Malaysian Agency Chairman Released on Bail in Corruption Probe

A prominent figure, identified only by the title Datuk and serving as the chairman of a government agency, has been released on bail. He had been in remand for a week as part of an investigation into alleged abuse of power concerning land disposal transactions in Penang. The deals are reported to have resulted in losses amounting to RM1.96 million.

The 53-year-old chairman was released on approximately RM10,000 bail, accompanied by a guarantor. His lawyer stated that the client fully cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) throughout the investigation and is prepared to assist further if required.

Notably, another individual, also holding the title Datuk and who was remanded alongside the agency chairman, has also been released. Both were initially detained to aid investigations into the land disposal case. Earlier, they, along with three other suspects, were remanded for four days. The other three suspects, including a director, a technical manager, and a female clerk, were subsequently released on bail over the weekend.
