Malaysian border control at Pasir Gudang terminal needs enhancement, says MACC

Border control management at the Pasir Gudang Ferry Terminal in Johor requires significant strengthening, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The MACC's assessment highlights the need for improved governance to boost enforcement efficiency, close control loopholes, and ensure the safety of the nation's entry points.

Johor MACC Deputy Director Sheikh Hamadi Sheikh Abdul Hamid stated that reinforcing governance, coordinating operations, and implementing more systematic control mechanisms among the relevant agencies are crucial. These improvements aim to reduce control gaps and enhance the integrity of service delivery at the terminal.

Reinforcing governance, coordinating operations, and a more systematic control mechanism between the three parties are important to reduce control gaps and improve the integrity of service delivery.

The MACC has proposed five key recommendations. These include installing high-definition closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at critical inspection locations and equipping frontline officers with body-worn cameras (BWCs). Additionally, the commission suggests a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), the Immigration Department, and the terminal management.

Further suggestions involve the installation of a smart gate system capable of real-time tracking of entry and exit movements and the development of Integrated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Border Control Management. Both AKPS Pasir Gudang Deputy Commander Mohamed Ya’akob Mohamed Sultan and Pasir Gudang Passenger Terminal Sdn. Bhd. General Manager Mohd. Tuah Mohd. Amin welcomed these proposals, viewing them as vital steps to bolster institutional integrity and improve national border control.
