Man fined $770 for defaming woman on social media in Vietnam

Authorities in Can Tho, Vietnam, have fined a local man 12.5 million Vietnamese dong (approximately $770 USD) for defaming a woman on social media. The man, identified as P.V.S., was found to have spread false information and shared images of the woman, N.T.H., on his personal Facebook account.

The case began when Ms. N.T.H., aged 59, filed a complaint with the Hoa Tu commune police. She alleged that Mr. S. had used his Facebook profile to post defamatory content that damaged her honor and dignity.

Following the complaint, the Hoa Tu commune police investigated the allegations. Mr. S. admitted to posting and sharing Ms. H.'s images along with false information on his Facebook page, as stated in her complaint. The police determined that his actions constituted the provision and sharing of fabricated, false, and slanderous information intended to harm the reputation of an organization or individual.

In addition to the financial penalty, Mr. S. has been ordered to remove the defamatory content he posted online. The fine was imposed for the act of disseminating false information that insulted the reputation, honor, and dignity of an individual.
