Man to plead guilty to harassment in UnitedHealthcare CEO murder case; sentencing in December

Luigi Mangione has announced he will plead guilty to harassment charges connected to the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione, 28, is accused of fatally shooting Thompson, 50, on a New York street in December 2024. Prosecutors allege the murder was an act of retaliation against the U.S. health insurance system.

During a federal court appearance, Mangione stated, "I shot Mr. Thompson and he died." He also acknowledged, "I knew what I was doing was illegal." Previously, Mangione described his actions leading up to the murder, detailing how he traveled from out of state to Manhattan in November 2024. He then emailed UnitedHealthcare's management, posing as an investor managing over $15 billion in assets, to request conference information. He noted that unlike previous interactions with insurers, he received a swift response within an hour.

Federal Judge Margaret Garnett accepted Mangione's guilty plea to charges 1 and 2 of the indictment. Sentencing for Mangione in the federal case is scheduled for December 18. The judge requested two weeks' notice if any party intends to present witnesses in person during the sentencing hearing.

Mangione left the courtroom after entering his plea and concluding the hearing. He remains in federal custody awaiting sentencing.
