Officials Detained in Mexico Over Alleged Extortion Scheme

A judge in Chalco, Mexico, has ordered pre-trial detention for two officials, identified as Raúl “N” and Carlos Eduardo “N,” who are under investigation for their alleged involvement in an extortion ring. The network is accused of targeting owners of vehicle inspection centers in the State of Mexico.

The detention order followed a lengthy hearing that extended over 16 hours. During the proceedings, the defense team argued for the illegal nature of the arrests and contested the existence of the alleged crime, requesting the immediate release of their clients. However, the judge dismissed these arguments, siding with the prosecution's presentation.

One of the public servants faces charges of aggravated extortion, while the other is accused of abuse of authority. Investigations suggest they were part of a criminal enterprise that victimized both owners of vehicle inspection centers and the general public using these services. The judge has scheduled the continuation of the hearing for August 15, at which point a decision will be made regarding whether to formally link the men to the ongoing legal process.
