Massive Fire Engulfs Battery Energy Storage Hall in Buzău

A significant fire erupted Wednesday evening at a battery energy storage facility in Stâlpu, Buzău County, Romania. The blaze consumed a 500-square-meter hall dedicated to storing electrical energy in batteries.

Firefighters faced challenging conditions as the fire spread with open flames throughout the entire structure. The hall is part of a complex with two sections; the second hall, which was unoccupied, accumulated smoke but remained unaffected by the flames. Both halls were equipped with fire detection and suppression systems.

As of 11:20 PM, the fire was still raging with intense flames. Given the nature of the materials involved and the high internal temperatures, emergency responders adopted a defensive strategy, operating from approximately 200 meters away. Support was mobilized from the ISU Prahova and ISU București-Ilfov regions, bringing the total response to six fire engines from Buzău, a rescue vehicle, a SMURD ambulance, a powder and nitrogen fire engine, two more fire engines from Prahova, a robot transport vehicle, and a powder container from Bucharest.

Despite the scale of the incident, no injuries or casualties have been reported. The leadership of ISU Buzău was present at the scene, and an operational group was activated to coordinate the extensive intervention efforts.
