Massive sinkhole swallows yards in Torreón, families fear for homes

A large sinkhole has opened in Torreón, Coahuila, causing significant damage to two homes and forcing at least five families to evacuate. The collapse occurred when a section of the Zaragoza collector system failed, leading to the rear patios of two houses caving in.

Residents described hearing a loud noise before witnessing the walls of their homes fall. The incident has heightened fears for the safety of their properties, with concerns growing about structural damage to other nearby houses. The situation is particularly distressing for families who consider their homes their life's savings.

This is not the first time the area has experienced such problems. Neighbors reported that the street has been opened for repairs on the Zaragoza collector at least four times in the past four years. They expressed frustration and worry, stating that previous assurances that the issue was resolved have not held true.

Crews from the Torreón water system are currently working to repair the damaged section of the collector. However, recent rainfall has complicated their efforts. State Civil Protection will conduct a structural assessment of the affected homes to determine the precise causes of the damage and evaluate the extent of the structural integrity issues.
