Maxima admits cheese weight errors after customer investigation

A recent investigation shared on social media has brought to light significant weight discrepancies in cheese sold at the Lithuanian supermarket chain Maxima. A content creator, Ignotascool, shared findings from customers who weighed cheese purchased from Maxima stores, revealing that the actual weight was often nearly half of what was stated on the packaging labels. One customer reportedly bought cheese labeled as 278 grams, only to find it weighed 120 grams, effectively paying double the price. Another instance involved cheese packages that should have weighed 2.5 kg but totaled only 1.19 kg. Maxima has acknowledged the issue, with Ernesta Vareikytė, the chain's Head of Media Relations, confirming the situation and apologizing to customers. Vareikytė explained that the discrepancies occurred because the standard procedure of weighing and labeling each cheese piece individually was not followed. Instead, all cheese pieces were weighed, labels were printed, and then applied to the products, leading to mismatches. The supermarket chain has since re-weighed cheeses in its display cases and retrained staff on correct procedures to prevent recurrence. Customers who experienced similar issues and have their receipts can seek compensation, either in-store or by contacting Maxima via email with proof of purchase.
