Mayor Mejía Celebrates Santo Domingo's Anniversary, Highlights Games' Impact and Athlete Support

Santo Domingo Mayor Carolina Mejía marked the city's 528th anniversary by celebrating the positive influence of the Central American and Caribbean Games and announcing a community-focused initiative. Mejía highlighted the Games' impact, stating that promoting citizen well-being and supporting national sports achievements are the best ways to honor the city's founding.

Today we also gave thanks to God for the opportunity to work for Santo Domingo, but especially for collaborating and building well-being for our people.

Central to the celebration was an initiative to support Marileidy Paulino, a celebrated athlete. With support from Banco Popular Dominicano, nine buses will transport residents from Paulino's hometowns of Nizao and Don Gregorio to her competition. Tickets have also been secured, allowing her community to witness her compete in an international event for the first time and cheer her on to what is hoped to be another victory for the country.

Banco Popular Dominicano has allowed us to bring nine buses from Don Gregorio and Nizao. We have purchased the tickets so that the people from her beloved land can experience her triumph in an international event for the first time and participate in that great gold medal we are all waiting for.

Mejía described this as one of the most significant anniversary celebrations, fostering family unity, community spirit, and national pride. She also pointed to the urban development spurred by the Games as a key legacy of her administration. Spaces like the Malecón Deportivo, Paseo Marítimo del Malecón, and Paseo 30 de Mayo have proven valuable for sports and recreation, with the Paseo 30 de Mayo notably hosting the Dominican Republic's gold medal wins in 3x3 basketball.
