Mayor's Daughter's Municipal Property Lease Request Sparks Controversy in Villeta

A request for the lease of municipal property in Villeta, Paraguay, has sparked controversy due to the applicant's relationship with the town's mayor. Natalia Mercedes Gómez Noguera, daughter of Mayor Teodosio R. Gómez Ibáñez, applied to lease a rural property.

The request was presented to the Municipal Council on August 3rd. During the session, the head of the Public Works Committee, Julio Gamarra, brought the request for consideration. However, the proposal faced immediate opposition from council members who cited concerns about the applicant's eligibility under the Municipal Organic Law, given her familial connection to the mayor.

Councilwoman Laura Acosta strongly opposed the lease, calling the request "a disgrace" and stating it should be rejected outright. She questioned why council members would support such requests when many citizens are in need of municipal land. "It is lamentable that there are colleagues who lend themselves to these kinds of situations when there are so many people in need out there. I vote for rejection, Mr. President," Acosta declared during the session.

Despite the objections, the request was initially intended for immediate treatment but was instead forwarded to the Public Works Committee for analysis. The property in question is located on departmental route D070, spanning 2,518 square meters with a built area of 380 square meters. A police background check indicated the applicant owns a residence, and the check was requested for the purpose of managing a title for fiscal land.

Councilwoman Mariela Jazmín Krayacich, who initially proposed the immediate treatment, later requested the file be sent to the Public Works Committee for review after her initial motion did not proceed. The situation has caused a stir within the Villeta Municipal Council, highlighting tensions over the use of public resources and potential conflicts of interest.
