Mayor's death in Guerrero shrouded in mystery, authorities offer no explanation

The mayor of Huamuxtitlán, Daniel Méndez Flores, died in the community of Santa Cruz, in Guerrero's Montaña region, without authorities providing an official explanation for his death. The State Attorney General's Office confirmed his passing but offered no details, only stating an investigation had been opened.

Three unofficial accounts of the incident are circulating. One suggests the mayor accidentally shot himself while handling a weapon at home. Another claims an armed group stormed his residence and killed him. A third version states he was assassinated by an armed group while dining at a restaurant. Security sources indicate he sustained at least two gunshot wounds, one to the head, which contradicts the accident theory.

Méndez Flores, who represented Movimiento Ciudadano, was elected in a process marred by violence. During the campaign, Abraham Ramírez, father of his main opponent, was assassinated. Hours before voting, Méndez Flores' home was attacked. Following his inauguration, Aurelio Méndez, who had handed over the municipal government to him a month prior, was also murdered.

Under the administration of Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda, four incumbent mayors, one mayor-elect, and seven former municipal presidents have been assassinated in the state.
