Mbappe misses penalty as Parrott lifts Betis past Real Madrid

Troy Parrott’s first goal for Real Betis ended Real Madrid’s perfect start under José Mourinho, while goalkeeper Álvaro Valles saved a late penalty from Kylian Mbappé to secure a 1-0 victory.

Madrid had won its first three La Liga matches since Mourinho began his second spell in charge. Real Betis absorbed sustained pressure at the Benito Villamarín, with Vinícius Júnior hitting the post and Mbappé denied twice by blocks from Natan and Marc Bartra.

Betis took the lead nine minutes before the end. Thibaut Courtois saved Nelson Deossa’s header, but Parrott fired in the rebound. Carlos Espí appeared to equalize with an acrobatic finish from a Vinícius cross, though officials ruled the goal offside.

Mbappé later struck the crossbar before receiving a chance to level from the penalty spot after Natan’s late challenge on Vinícius. Valles saved the kick deep into stoppage time, preserving a memorable win that moved Betis level with Madrid on nine points from four matches.
