Medellín offers 5,000 free AI training spots for future jobs

Medellín is launching an ambitious initiative to equip 5,000 citizens with generative artificial intelligence skills, aiming to bridge the digital talent gap and open doors to future employment. The program, a collaboration between the city's government, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and the Metropolitan Technological Institute (ITM), is part of the 'IA sin límites' (AI without limits) program.

The learning path consists of eight practical modules, available in Spanish, that cover fundamental AI concepts and progress to building real-world solutions. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive official AWS credentials, serving as a certification of their newly acquired expertise. This effort aligns with Medellín's broader goal of training 50,000 individuals in digital skills and establishing the city as a hub for innovation.

"From the District, we have a determined commitment to the innovation and talent of our people, which is why this alliance with AWS seeks to bring knowledge to more than 5,000 people," stated María Fernanda Galeano Rojo, Secretary of Economic Development for Medellín. She emphasized the program's contribution to the city's digital transformation objectives.

The initiative extends beyond coursework with a hackathon scheduled for August 20 at the ITM, where the top 250 students will showcase their AI abilities. Following this, a job fair will connect around 50 companies with the trained talent, directly linking participants to the productive sector. This focus on practical application and job placement is crucial, given the rapidly increasing demand for AI specialists. According to PwC, AI-related jobs have grown 3.5 times faster than average since 2016, with potential salary increases of up to 25%.
