Medical Professors Urge Caution on Internship Doctor Deaths, Citing Workload Concerns

The Indonesian Medical Council of Professors (MGBKI) has voiced strong concerns regarding the Ministry of Health's (Kemenkes) tendency to quickly attribute the deaths of internship doctors to pre-existing health conditions. MGBKI's Zainal Muttaqin argues that this approach is flawed and overlooks potential systemic issues within the training programs. He points to four previous cases of internship doctor deaths where Kemenkes allegedly concluded the cause was solely health-related without thorough investigation. Muttaqin stresses that while many Indonesians, including doctors, may have underlying health problems, the responsibility lies with the educational institutions and hospitals to monitor and manage these conditions during the internship period. He believes it is a significant failure if these institutions are unaware of the health status of their trainees. The MGBKI's stance challenges the narrative that the interns are solely to blame due to their health, advocating instead for accountability from the program administrators. This perspective is crucial in Indonesia, where the well-being and training of future medical professionals are paramount. The council's intervention aims to ensure a more rigorous and fair investigation process, preventing a recurrence of such tragic incidents and upholding the integrity of medical education in the country. The alumni of Sriwijaya University's Faculty of Medicine (IKA FK Unsri) are also actively involved, demanding an audit of the hospital where one intern, Myta Aprilia Azmy, reportedly faced heavy workloads before her death.
