Medjugorje responds to vandalism with prayer and forgiveness

Medjugorje, a renowned pilgrimage site, experienced a significant attack on its sacred spaces when an unknown perpetrator defaced a statue of the Virgin Mary on Podbrdo hill and the Blue Cross with black spray paint. The vandal also set fire to an outdoor altar near St. James' Church, a place where thousands of pilgrims gather daily.

Local authorities received the first report around 4:30 a.m. regarding damage to the statue on Podbrdo. Half an hour later, a fire was reported at the outdoor altar. Surveillance cameras captured a man pouring flammable liquid on the altar and igniting it before fleeing. The fire was quickly contained, preventing it from spreading to the church building, but causing material damage to the recently renovated altar.

For the faithful arriving at the site, the damage was deeply distressing. The statue of the Virgin Mary was covered with offensive messages and graffiti. Many pilgrims knelt and prayed in silence and tears as the statue was cleaned. A white cloth was placed over the defaced statue, creating a poignant image of a wounded sacred icon surrounded by grieving worshippers.

Officials from the Parish Office of Medjugorje expressed deep sadness over the vandalism. They emphasized that cleaning and repairs were immediately undertaken to ensure the prayer spaces remain dignified. They urged believers to respond to the act not with anger or hatred, but with prayer, fasting, and forgiveness, as taught by the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje for over forty years. "We pray for the conversion of hearts of those who committed this act, that the Lord touches them with his grace and leads them on the path of good. We also pray for peace in the hearts of all people," the office stated, calling the incident a catalyst to take the Virgin Mary's message of peace more seriously.
