Mexican senators demand stronger hurricane alerts after Acapulco tragedy

Mexican senators are demanding enhanced hurricane alert systems and emergency response protocols, pointing to past failures that resulted in tragic outcomes, such as the inadequate warning during Hurricane Otis in Acapulco.

The warning from the National Meteorological Service highlights an impending period of intense rainfall, driven by the Mexican monsoon, low-pressure systems, and moisture from the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea. These conditions are expected to bring heavy rains, lightning, strong winds, and high waves, escalating the risk of urban flooding, overflowing rivers, landslides in mountainous areas, severe waterlogging, falling trees, and disruptions to critical infrastructure.

In response, senators from the PRI party have introduced a proposal for the National Civil Protection Coordination to collaborate with state and municipal authorities. Their plan focuses on reinforcing prevention, monitoring, early warning dissemination, and emergency preparedness for hydrometeorological phenomena. The proposal also calls for state and municipal governments to implement risk-reduction measures, including identifying vulnerable zones, clearing riverbeds and drainage systems, establishing temporary shelters, and promoting self-protection guidelines.

Furthermore, the senators requested the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation to intensify supervision and preventive maintenance of federal road infrastructure, bridges, and communication routes. This is to mitigate potential damage from heavy rains, floods, landslides, or collapses, ensuring the resilience of vital transportation networks.
