Mexico City Mayor Reports Declines in Homicides, Vehicle Theft, and Extortion

Clara Brugada, the head of government for Mexico City, announced positive security developments, stating that key crime rates have declined across the capital and the broader metropolitan area. Speaking at the Inter-state Coordination Meeting for Peace and Security in Tecámac, State of Mexico, Brugada emphasized the reduction in intentional homicides, vehicle theft with and without violence, and extortion.

Brugada asserted that Mexico City has experienced a consistent downward trend in crime for seven years. She specifically noted a 64% decrease in high-impact crimes between 2019 and the present. The mayor also provided a specific statistic for vehicle theft, reporting that the average number of daily vehicle thefts dropped from 18 in 2019 to 14 by June 2026.

She further highlighted the city's successful management of security during the recent FIFA World Cup, which concluded on July 19. Brugada, accompanied by members of Mexico City's Security Cabinet and the Governor of the State of Mexico, Delfina Gómez, expressed confidence in the collaborative approach to enhancing public safety. The meeting underscored the commitment to regional cooperation in addressing security challenges.
