Mexico City Plants 35,000 Trees, Launches New Urban Forestry Program

Mexico City has joined the National Reforestation Campaign by planting 35,000 trees across the metropolitan area. Head of Government Clara Brugada led the initiative, announcing a new urban forestry program focused on revitalizing the capital's most challenging areas.

In the Sierra de Santa Catarina, we are united with President Claudia Sheinbaum in this great National Reforestation Campaign. Today it's the turn of the Santa Catarina Conservation Land so we have more green, more life, more oxygen.

During an event at the 'El Zapote' Ecological Park in Tláhuac, Brugada highlighted the planting of 10,000 trees within the Sierra de Santa Catarina conservation area alone. She emphasized the joint effort with President Claudia Sheinbaum to increase green spaces, improve air quality, and protect the environment. The government also reported recovering 300 hectares of green land previously encroached upon by urban sprawl.

Further efforts include prohibiting transgenic corn production within the city and working to eradicate illegal logging in the southern Bosque de Agua. Brugada acknowledged the support from the Mexican government and the Secretariat of National Defense in these reforestation and conservation endeavors. President Sheinbaum noted that over 400,000 volunteers, along with the armed forces and citizens, participated nationwide, proposing the second Sunday of August as the National Reforestation Day.

We inform that we have prohibited the production of transgenic corn in Mexico City and that we are about to eradicate the illegal logging of trees in the Bosque de Agua in the south of Mexico City with the support of federal forces as well.
