Mexico dismantles three drug labs and seizes nearly 17 tonnes in Sinaloa

Mexican authorities seized nearly 17 tonnes of suspected methamphetamine while dismantling three clandestine laboratories in Sinaloa, including the second-largest facility found during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration.

The Navy led the operation with the Attorney General’s Office and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection. The actions took place near Corralejo and Corral Viejo. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch called the main seizure “one of the most important blows against synthetic drug production” of the current administration.

The largest operation took place on September 3 near Corralejo. Authorities found a laboratory covering about 5,700 square meters and seized approximately 16,350 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine in different stages of production. They also confiscated 4,350 liters of precursors, essential chemicals and dual-use substances, along with 5,700 kilograms of solid materials used to make drugs.

The government estimated that dismantling the complex caused criminal organizations an economic impact of nearly $347 million by reducing their operational, logistical and financial capacity. Two other operations took place on September 2. One uncovered an 800-square-meter laboratory in Corralejo, while the other targeted a roughly 450-square-meter facility in Corral Viejo.

The Security Cabinet said five laboratories disabled by the Navy in recent weeks had yielded about 18.2 tonnes of methamphetamine, 10 tonnes of chemical precursors and 6,845 liters of precursors. Authorities placed the seized laboratories and materials in the relevant investigative files and disabled the facilities.
