Migrants Flood Spanish Enclave Ceuta Amid 'Serious Humanitarian Crisis'

Thousands of migrants are arriving in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, located on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, with many seeking improved living conditions and a better future. Among them is 16-year-old Ajub El Abyadas from Morocco, who was inspired to make the journey after seeing videos on Instagram. He and his cousin traveled for 12 hours by car, hoping to cross the border, stating, "Migration is about improving our lives. We decided we would try to cross the border and trust in Allah." Dunija Kherradi, a waitress from Lklij, expressed similar hopes, saying, "I came here looking for a better future. My salary is not enough to take care of my parents, and I still have a daughter... May God help us." The influx of migrants has led to what Rachid Sbihi, head of the local workers' association representing Civil Guard officers, described as a "serious humanitarian crisis." He noted that reinforcements have arrived but are primarily assisting with the injured and other humanitarian efforts. Ceuta, home to just under 85,000 residents, is one of two Spanish territories in North Africa. Migrants often reach Ceuta by swimming along the coast or by crossing the heavily fortified border with Morocco, thereby entering EU territory. The images show mostly young men, but also families with women and children, scaling rocks that form part of a breakwater marking the border with Morocco.
