Minister: Berlin car attack was an Islamist terror attack

Germany's Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, has declared that the vehicle attack targeting a crowd at a Berlin Pride event on Saturday evening was an "Islamist terrorist attack." The minister's assessment is based on all available evidence gathered so far.

The incident tragically claimed the life of one woman and left 29 others injured. This updated casualty figure represents an increase from previous reports, which had stated 16 people were wounded.

Authorities are actively searching for a 21-year-old man, referred to by police as Abdul B., who is considered the prime suspect. Police have indicated that the suspect has ties to Islamist extremist groups and is already known to law enforcement. German media reports suggest he has a history of violent crimes and extortion and was recently released from a youth detention center.

The suspect is a German citizen of Lebanese descent. Following the attack, German police have intensified their presence at the country's borders, including the frontier with Denmark, as the manhunt continues.
