Minister to Propose Declaring State of Emergency After Storm

Lithuania faces widespread power outages and agricultural losses after a severe storm left tens of thousands of residents and businesses without electricity. In response, the Minister of Agriculture, Kęstutis Mažeika, announced he will propose declaring a state of emergency across the entire country.

While some districts have already declared local emergencies, a nationwide declaration would enable Lithuania to formally request assistance from the European Commission. This measure would also provide relief to businesses experiencing disruptions in their supply chains, preventing them from facing penalties. Companies affected by losses will need to negotiate compensation directly with ESO, the electricity provider.

The storm resulted in one fatality and four injuries. Tens of thousands of ESO customers are still without power. The government plans to provide compensation to affected residents. Farmers who suffered losses can seek support from ILTE, the state development bank.

The proposal for a state of emergency aims to streamline aid and recovery efforts following the storm's significant impact. The government is working to address the immediate needs of those affected while also considering longer-term support for agricultural businesses.
