Minor Earthquake Rattles Zagreb Area

A slight tremor, measuring 2.0 on the Richter scale, rattled the wider Zagreb area on Sunday evening, causing mild alarm among residents. The earthquake occurred at 9:29 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located approximately 29 kilometers southwest of the Croatian capital and about 10 kilometers east-southeast of Jastrebarsko.

The seismic event, recorded at a depth of around 12 kilometers, was documented by the Seismological Office of the Slovenian Environmental Agency (ARSO). Despite its low magnitude, the shaking was perceptible to some inhabitants in the affected region.

Residents described the experience with a mix of surprise and unease. One witness from Lasinja, located about 16 kilometers southeast of the epicenter, reported hearing a sound like something breaking, followed by the shaking. Another resident in Pokupsko, roughly 24 kilometers southeast of the epicenter, described a loud noise, akin to an explosion, preceding the brief tremor. Some also noted sounds of their house roofs creaking.

While the earthquake was minor, the descriptions from residents highlight the unsettling nature of even slight seismic activity. The event serves as a reminder of the region's seismic vulnerability, though no significant damage has been reported.
