MLB News: Phillies Close Market with Luxury Reinforcement in Luis Arráez

The Philadelphia Phillies are making significant moves at the trade deadline, acquiring Venezuelan infielder Luis Arráez and pitchers Caleb Kilian and Brooks Raley. Arráez, a 29-year-old standout, joins the Phillies from the San Francisco Giants, while Kilian and Raley come from the Giants and New York Mets, respectively.

Arráez, a four-time All-Star, has been a consistent offensive force, batting .324 with a .801 OPS, four home runs, and 43 RBIs in 105 games this season. He currently ranks second in MLB in batting average, trailing only Yordan Álvarez, and boasts the lowest strikeout rate in the league at 4.5%. Known for his contact hitting, Arráez has also significantly improved his defense at second base, a position he was previously considered a liability.

His defensive improvements are a result of dedicated winter training with personal coach Rainer Olmedo and continued work with infield guru Ron Washington. Arráez has recorded +10 Outs Above Average at second base, ranking him among the top infielders in MLB. He accepted a one-year, $12 million contract with the Giants in the offseason, prioritizing a return to second base.

Pitcher Brooks Raley, a reliable reliever for the Mets in 2023 with a 2.80 ERA over 66 appearances, was acquired from the rival Mets. Despite undergoing Tommy John surgery in December 2022, which threatened his career, Raley has made a successful comeback, celebrating his 36th and 37th birthdays during his recovery.
