MOP and Fourth Bridge Consortium sign addendum for East Interchange redesign

Panama's infrastructure development continues with a significant addendum signed for the Fourth Bridge over the Panama Canal. The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) and the Panama Fourth Bridge Consortium (CPCP) have agreed to a $295 million redesign of the East Interchange, a crucial component of the mega-project. This amendment increases the total cost of the Fourth Bridge to an impressive $2.387 billion and pushes the completion deadline from October to December 2028. Minister of Public Works José Luis Andrade highlighted that the original design of the East Interchange, conceived by the previous administration, would have led to severe traffic bottlenecks upon the bridge's opening. The redesigned interchange is set to become the largest in Panama, and possibly Central America, promising to facilitate seamless traffic flow into and out of Panama City. This project is vital for connecting the capital with Panama Oeste, alleviating congestion on the existing Bridge of the Americas and Centennial Bridge, and improving overall transit times. The Fourth Bridge itself is a marvel of engineering, featuring a cable-stayed design with a length of 965 meters, 186-meter towers, and a 75-meter navigation clearance for neopanamax vessels. With 35% of the project already complete, its eventual delivery in December 2028 will mark a significant milestone in Panama's ongoing efforts to modernize its transportation network and enhance its strategic position as a regional hub.
