More Pentagon officials resign as Army Secretary Dan Driscoll steps down

Dan Driscoll has become the latest senior Pentagon official to resign under President Donald Trump, leaving the Army secretary’s post after 18 months.

The White House did not explain why Driscoll stepped down. Reuters, citing several sources, reported that his resignation followed tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the past few months. An Army official told The Associated Press that Driscoll had discussed his plans with Trump before submitting his formal resignation.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly praised Driscoll for strengthening the Army’s readiness, helping negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and advancing Trump’s agenda. Her statement did not mention any friction between Driscoll and Hegseth.

The resignation comes after a major series of changes in Army leadership. In April, Hegseth abruptly removed senior official General Randy George. General Christopher Donahue, who commanded U.S. forces in Europe and Africa, left in June. General Christopher LaNeve, who rose quickly during Hegseth’s tenure, is serving as acting Army chief of staff.

The Navy has also seen a senior departure. The Pentagon announced the resignation of Navy Secretary John Phelan in April.
