Motorist at twice speed limit among 100 detected speeding

A motorist traveling at 130km/h in a 60km/h zone in Co Cavan was among more than 100 drivers detected speeding during a Garda roads policing operation yesterday. This driver was exceeding the speed limit by more than double.

The operation is ongoing throughout the June bank holiday weekend, having commenced at 7am on Thursday and scheduled to conclude next Tuesday. The driver caught exceeding the speed limit by over twice the legal limit was on the R188 at Drung in Cavan. Other detected speeding incidents included a driver at 85km/h in a 50km/h zone in Swords, Dublin, and another at 141km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N11 in Wicklow.

In addition to speeding offenses, the operation has resulted in 56 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs so far this weekend. Gardaí also reported that over 115 drivers have been caught using their mobile phones or failing to wear seatbelts during the operation. Authorities are urging all road users to exercise caution this weekend and to be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists.
