Mount Bromo Wildfire Spreads to 176 Hectares, Tourist Access Fully Closed

Mount Bromo, a popular tourist destination in East Java, Indonesia, is currently battling a significant wildfire that has consumed 176 hectares of land. Authorities have imposed a total closure of all tourist access to the national park, effective August 8, 2026, at 10:00 PM WIB, until further notice. The decision aims to facilitate firefighting operations and ensure visitor safety.

The fire, which started on August 3, has spread rapidly due to strong winds. The Head of the Probolinggo Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency, Oemar Sjarief, confirmed that the flames are advancing along the Tengger Caldera Ring Road (JLKT) towards the Jantur block. Firefighting teams are prioritizing their safety, gathering at a secure point on the JLKT before resuming operations once the wind subsides. They are working to contain the spread by preventing the fire from crossing an old path, hoping to stop it from advancing northward.

We received information on the development of the fire in TNBTS that the fire is spreading in the JLKT area towards the Jantur block due to strong winds.

The scale of the wildfire has increased dramatically. Initial reports on August 3 indicated an affected area of just 7.9 hectares. This figure surged to 44 hectares, then 51 hectares, before reaching the current 176 hectares by Friday evening. The rapid escalation highlights the vulnerability of the conservation area to swift fire propagation. All entrances to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS), including those in Probolinggo, Pasuruan, Malang, and Lumajang, are now closed.
