MUI Economic Institute Pushes for Stronger, More Professional Governance of Islamic Organizations

The Economic Development Institute of the Indonesian Ulema Council (LPEU MUI) is actively encouraging improved governance and professional management within Islamic community organizations. This initiative was highlighted during a two-day training session on Risk Based Performance Management, conducted in collaboration with the Indonesian Energy Risk Management Association (AMREI).

We hope this training is not just a formality, but is important for fixing our organization, our governance, and our institutions. Both institutions within the MUI environment and in the community organizations where we are located.

The training, held at the MUI building in Jakarta from August 7-8, 2026, focused on the theme "Carefully Managing Risk, Strongly Guiding the Ummah, Sustainably Spreading Goodness." Participants included leaders and officials from 40 different commissions, bodies, and institutions (KBL) within the MUI structure.

Mukhaer Pakkanna, the Chairman of LPEU MUI, stressed that the training was designed as more than just a formal event. He stated its importance in "fixing our organization, our governance, and our institutions," applying to both MUI's internal bodies and broader community organizations. Pakkanna described risk management training as a vital component of strategic management for any organization.

The weakness of the Muslim ummah is often in the ability to organize and manage oneself or the organization. I quote Sayyidina Ali that truth that is not organized will be defeated by falsehood that is organized.

He further elaborated that the training equipped participants with technical skills, covering target setting, vision and mission development, and mitigating potential risks. Pakkanna identified a significant weakness among Muslims as a deficiency in organizing and institutionalizing themselves, quoting Ali ibn Abi Talib: "Truth that is not organized will be defeated by falsehood that is organized." The sessions included simulations and practical exercises led by experts from AMREI, with a strong turnout from the KBL representatives. Mukhaer expressed hope that the acquired knowledge and practices would be implemented effectively by the officials in their organizational leadership roles.

Alhamdulillah, the participation of participants from KBL was quite large. We hope that the knowledge and practice from this training can be implemented in a real way by the officials in running the wheels of the organization going forward.
