Multi-Car Collision in Su-ao Tunnel Disrupts Traffic

A chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles occurred in the northbound lane of the Su-ao Tunnel on the Suhua Highway in Yilan County, Taiwan, on the afternoon of August 24, 2026. The accident caused damage to three of the involved cars but fortunately resulted in no injuries.

Authorities received the report of the traffic incident at approximately 2:31 PM. Upon arrival, police found that a 27-year-old male driver of a small truck had rear-ended the vehicle in front of him, triggering the multi-car pile-up. The impact damaged three passenger cars.

All drivers involved tested zero for alcohol content. The exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the police. The damaged vehicles were removed from the scene by tow trucks, and normal traffic flow through the Su-ao Tunnel was eventually restored.

Police reminded drivers to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and to be aware of their surroundings. They also advised on the proper procedure for handling accidents where no one is injured and vehicles are still drivable: place warning signs, call the authorities, mark the vehicle positions, move vehicles to the side of the road if possible, and wait for the police.
