Taiwan road collapses after heavy rain; car rescued

Continuous heavy rainfall in Tainan, Taiwan, has led to a significant landslide in the Liujia mountain area, causing a section of the Donggaoruonan No. 115 rural road to collapse. The incident occurred at kilometer 1.6, where the road surface cracked and a 20-meter long, 2-meter high section gave way.

A local resident driving a car inadvertently entered the unstable area on Thursday morning. The vehicle became trapped in the collapsed section of the narrow road. Due to the road's limited width, a small crane could not be used for immediate rescue.

Local authorities were alerted and dispatched additional equipment to assist. By Thursday afternoon, both the driver and the vehicle were safely extricated. The Liujia District Office has since expanded the cordoned-off area and reinforced warning signs.

District Chief Chen Qi-rong urged the public to avoid mountainous areas during the ongoing heavy rains. He noted that the soil on the slopes is saturated, increasing the risk of further instability. The city government has been notified to commence repair work on the damaged road.
