Municipal Claims 33rd Guatemalan Title, Defeating Xelajú in Clausura Final

The club Municipal has been crowned champion of the Guatemalan Clausura 2026 tournament, securing their 33rd league title after defeating Xelajú MC 2-1 in the second leg of the final. This victory cemented a commanding 6-2 aggregate score, reinforcing Municipal's position as the most decorated club in Guatemalan football.

Under the guidance of Nicaraguan coach Mario Acevedo, the Guatemala City-based team successfully defended the substantial 4-1 advantage they established in the first leg. The final match saw a resurgence of the intense rivalry between Municipal and Xelajú, a matchup not seen in a final since 2012 when Xelajú emerged victorious in a penalty shootout.

Despite Xelajú taking an early lead in the 14th minute with a goal from Manuel Romero, the momentum shifted when Romero inadvertently scored an own goal in the 45th minute, leveling the score. Municipal's José Morales then secured the comeback victory with a decisive goal in the 57th minute.

This championship marks the end of a two-year title drought for Municipal, who had experienced consecutive final losses in the 2025 Clausura and Apertura tournaments. With this 33rd crown, Municipal now stands alone at the top of Guatemala's footballing history, surpassing their long-standing rivals Comunicaciones. Xelajú, managed by Mexican coach Roberto Hernández, was unable to replicate their past final comebacks, falling short of their eighth title.
