Nasarawa ex-deputy gov declares for Senate

The political landscape in Nasarawa State is heating up as former Deputy Governor Silas Agara formally announces his bid for the Nasarawa North Senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move signals a potential contest for influence within the state's ruling party, especially as the incumbent governor, Abdullahi Sule, is also rumored to be eyeing the same senatorial district after his second term as governor concludes next year.

I have embarked on a journey I will call a Christian missionary journey to make my humble contribution to the growth and development of this state.

Agara, who recently stepped down from his position as Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment, stated that his decision to enter the race was prompted by extensive consultations with political associates and supporters across the senatorial zone. He emphasized that he is answering a "clarion call" from his constituents, framing his candidacy as a "Christian missionary journey" to contribute to the state's development.

To heed the clarion call of our people, I decided to resign my appointment. I am doing so to honour the call of our people and to add value to the politics of the state.

Speaking at the APC State Working Committee in Lafia, Agara appealed to the party's leadership, particularly the State Party Chairman Dr. Aliyu Bello, to uphold internal democracy. He stressed the importance of transparent and unbiased primaries, asserting his belief in playing by the party's rules and advocating for a level playing field for all aspirants.

For me, Silas Agara, I am not competing with anyone for a stage. The stage is large enough for all of us to be able to show and to prove our worth.

The State APC Chairman, Dr. Aliyu Bello, acknowledged Agara's courage in relinquishing a stable federal appointment for the uncertainties of a grassroots campaign. Bello assured Agara and other aspirants that the party leadership is committed to ensuring that the upcoming primaries are free, fair, and credible, prioritizing a level playing field as a primary mandate.
