National Road Connectivity on Flores Island Restored Post-7.7 Magnitude Earthquake

Connectivity on national roads across Flores Island in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province has been fully restored after being disrupted by a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake. Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo confirmed that restoring land transportation access was the ministry's top priority from the first day of the disaster.

"We were indeed focused primarily on the roads. So, from the first day, following the guidance of the Head of BNPB, we opened all national roads," Hanggodo stated. He explained that landslides, triggered by the earthquake's tremors, were the main cause of the disruptions. The ministry has deployed heavy equipment, such as excavators, to key areas identified as landslide-prone to quickly address any further blockages from aftershocks.

Beyond road access, the Ministry of Public Works is also focusing on repairing damaged bridges. The Wae Pesi Bridge in Manggarai Regency, a vital link connecting Reo Port with other areas and a crucial route for fuel distribution, received special attention. "We were warned by the Head of BNPB and Coordinating Minister Pak Pratikno that this bridge must be prioritized because fuel transportation passes through here. Then we worked day and night. On the second day, thank God, the bridge was functional," Hanggodo reported.

The Wae Pesi Bridge is now operational under a limited, alternating traffic system. Load tests using a 20-ton fuel tanker have confirmed the bridge's structural integrity for current usage. Additionally, the ministry is addressing disruptions to water supply systems (SPAM) in the affected regions, where landslides have impacted river flows and reduced water sources. Emergency measures include providing public hydrants, water tank trucks, and portable toilets.
