National runner Odekta Elvina Naibaho wins Merdeka Run 2026, feels goosebumps from crowd's cheers

Indonesian national runner Odekta Elvina Naibaho experienced an emotional victory at the Merdeka Run 2026 in Jakarta, crossing the finish line first in the women's 8-kilometer race with a time of 26 minutes.

Naibaho shared that the overwhelming support from spectators and participants along the route, who chanted her name, gave her goosebumps and provided a significant energy boost. "I'm so happy this morning to see the extraordinary euphoria and spirit. Our spirit, with the cheers calling out, gave me goosebumps," she said after the race.

Despite the event being a public celebration, Naibaho emphasized her serious approach, aiming to set an example for younger athletes and those new to running. "It's a matter of pride, a professional athlete shouldn't play around. Especially since this is a people's festival, and I want to educate young athletes and enthusiasts who are new to running to see how real runners compete. So, we run seriously," she explained.

The Merdeka Run served as a crucial tune-up for Naibaho's participation in the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. She will be competing exclusively in the marathon, her specialty, rather than multiple events as she did in the SEA Games. Naibaho acknowledged the intense competition expected at the Asian Games, particularly from athletes from Japan and China, as well as those from countries that have naturalized runners. She anticipates finishing in the top eight to ten, recognizing that medal prospects are challenging due to factors like experience and race-day conditions.
