NATO jets down drone in Latvia; Finland takes maritime precautions

NATO fighter jets intercepted and downed a drone that violated Latvian airspace on Friday, the Latvian Armed Forces announced via X. The incident prompted Finland, another NATO member with a significant border with Russia, to enact precautionary measures, temporarily restricting air and maritime traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland. The Latvian Armed Forces confirmed the threat in their airspace had ended, stating, "Allied fighter jets successfully shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle that entered the airspace!" Concerns are growing among Russia's Nordic NATO neighbors about potential "false flag" attacks orchestrated by Moscow, possibly using Ukrainian drones. Latvia has experienced several drone-related incidents this year, including a Ukrainian drone crash in March and multiple warnings issued to residents in the Latgale region in May. While many reported drone presences were unconfirmed or the objects quickly left the area, some incidents, like two drones crashing at a disused oil depot in Rēzekne in early May, have been confirmed.
