Navigating Scholarly Differences: Guidance for Islamic Students

The rich tradition of Islamic scholarship is marked by diverse opinions among its learned figures, presenting a unique challenge for students navigating the complexities of religious knowledge. In response to this, the founder of Nahdlatul Ulama, KH Hasyim Asyari, offered guidance on how students, or 'santri,' should approach differing scholarly views.

According to Asyari's writings in 'Adab al Alim wa Mutaalim' (The Etiquette of the Scholar and the Student), santri must initially exercise restraint and avoid becoming absolutely entangled in the myriad of differing opinions among scholars or humanity in general. This includes both intellectual and auditory engagement, as such entanglement can lead to a wavering heart and an unsettled mind.

From the beginning, a student must be able to restrain themselves and not get caught up in the differences of opinion among scholars and humans in general absolutely.

Asyari advises students to commit to a single primary text, with the flexibility to consult others if permitted by their teacher. However, he cautions against following teachers who merely present diverse opinions without offering a definitive stance, referencing Imam Al Ghazali's warning that such approaches carry more potential harm than benefit.

Furthermore, Asyari stresses the importance of careful time management and concentration. He suggests that students should present their chosen texts and lessons to their teachers for review and guidance. He also warns against the habit of quoting from various books without necessity, as it can indicate boredom and a lack of divine favor. For students with a solid foundation, Asyari recommends focusing on understanding existing theories rather than creating new legal interpretations. True happiness, longevity, and peace, he posits, come from purifying oneself of ignorance and firmly adhering to knowledge, while valuing the practical application of that knowledge.
