Navua's Township Status Decades in the Making Amidst Infrastructure Hurdles

The Fijian government is moving forward with plans to grant Navua official township status, a development that has been a long time coming for the community. Discussions about upgrading Navua to a town began over five decades ago, in 1973, but have been repeatedly stalled by planning and infrastructure issues. Now, with significant population growth and expanding commercial activities, the case for township status is stronger than ever.

Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa highlighted the historical context, noting the initial proposal in 1973 and the subsequent delays. He emphasized that the current surge in residents moving into Navua and surrounding areas, coupled with robust development, makes this the opportune moment. However, he also acknowledged that crucial infrastructure upgrades, including roads and drainage systems, are still necessary and are currently being addressed.

But now, if you look at the at the development in Navua, in the population itself, now people are moving towards Navua as well as nearby areas, and there are also a lot of developments that are happening.

Permanent Secretary Seema Sharma confirmed that preparations are actively underway, with the goal of making Navua Fiji's 12th official town by September. The Ministry is focusing on finalizing proclamation documents and initiating tenders for essential facilities such as a market, bus stand, a new municipal office, and a town square. This move signifies a major step forward for Navua, promising enhanced services and development for its growing population.
