Nazi-style Netanyahu posters in Otwock spark outrage, prompt official response

Controversial posters depicting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a Nazi uniform have appeared in Otwock, Poland, prompting a strong reaction from local authorities and the public. The posters, which substitute swastikas with Stars of David and bear the German word "Übermenschen" (superhumans), have been condemned as crossing the line of acceptable political debate.

The use of Nazi symbolism and the replacement of the swastika with the Star of David crosses the boundaries of fair political debate. For many, this is no longer criticism of a specific politician or government, but the use of symbols with exceptionally painful historical significance.

One user on social media expressed outrage, noting that Otwock was a predominantly Jewish city before World War II, with nearly 11,000 Jewish residents in 1939. The user highlighted the historical trauma of the Holocaust, where thousands of Otwock's Jewish population were deported to Treblinka or murdered locally.

The Association for Cultural Cooperation Poland-Israel named after Aleks Dancyg has formally appealed to the Otwock city authorities. The association questions whether the presence of such posters aligns with the city's values and what actions, if any, will be taken. The posters also include the text "Israel is committing genocide in Palestine. The crime is led by Benjamin Netanyahu."

The same sign that identified Jews for centuries and that the Germans forced Jews to wear during the Holocaust has been placed here in place of the swastika. This is the aftermath of the authorities' indifference, the police's indifference, the general acceptance of anti-Semitism.

The origin of the posters remains unknown. The controversy has intensified due to Otwock's historical context, where the Jewish community was largely annihilated during the Nazi occupation. The association urges citizens to write to the city administration to inquire about the ownership and administration of the public spaces where the posters were displayed.

In the summer of 1939, almost 11,000 Jews lived here – almost 60 percent of all residents. On August 19, 1942, the Germans deported about 8,000 of them to Treblinka. Thousands more were murdered on the spot in the following weeks. Jewish Otwock practically ceased to exist.
