Paris Opera's Palais Garnier to Close for Five Years for Renovation Due to Lead Contamination

Paris's iconic Palais Garnier, also known as the Opéra Garnier or Paris Opera, will undergo a significant renovation, leading to its closure from 2027 to 2032. Initially planned for a two-year period (2027-2029), the renovation timeline has been extended by three years due to the discovery of lead contamination within the stage structure.

The 150-year-old architectural gem, famous for its eclectic style and Marc Chagall's controversial yet celebrated ceiling frescoes, requires this extensive work to meet stringent safety standards. The presence of lead necessitates its removal to ensure the well-being of artists and audiences. This decision, according to Opera Director Alexander Neef, was made out of responsibility to secure the venue's long-term future and avoid further major works in the coming years.

While the building will be closed for performances during these five years, the management intends to keep it open for public tours for most of the period. However, certain sections may be temporarily inaccessible due to the ongoing construction work. The total cost of the renovation is estimated at 450 million euros, with the state contributing approximately one-quarter of the funds.

Following the completion of the Palais Garnier's revitalization, the renovation will extend to the Opéra Bastille, the opera house's more contemporary venue opened in 1989. The Palais Garnier is not the only major Parisian landmark undergoing extensive modernization; other famous buildings, including the Centre Pompidou, are also slated for significant refurbishment.
