Nearly 62,000 ME/CFS Cases Treated in North Rhine-Westphalia

Nearly 61,600 individuals received outpatient treatment for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) in North Rhine-Westphalia last year, as reported by the state government in response to a query from the FDP party.

ME/CFS, a severe neuroimmunological illness, significantly impacts patients' lives. A quarter of those affected are bedridden, and an estimated over 60 percent are unable to work. The condition is characterized by profound fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, pain, sensory hypersensitivity, and disruptions to the immune and autonomic nervous systems, often triggered by minimal physical or mental exertion.

Experts suggest that the prevalence of ME/CFS has likely surged, with COVID-19 infections being a potential contributing factor. The reported figures may include duplicate entries, as individuals treated in different regional areas of the statutory health insurance physicians could be counted twice.

The government's data highlights the significant burden of ME/CFS within the state, underscoring the need for awareness and support for those suffering from this debilitating condition.
