Nebbi Mayor Jackline Opar Makes History As Wenda's First Female Vice Chairperson

In a significant milestone for women's leadership in the West Nile sub-region, Jackline Opar, the Mayor of Nebbi Municipality, has been elected the first female Vice Chairperson of the West Nile Development Association (WENDA). This historic election occurred during WENDA's sixth council sitting in Arua City, breaking a 33-year precedent where top leadership positions were exclusively held by men.

This is not just my victory; it is a victory for all women in West Nile. I am happy that after 33 years, there is finally a woman in the leadership of WENDA.

Opar will serve alongside Yumbe District LC V Chairperson Asiku Abdulmutwalib, who was elected Chairperson. Delegates and stakeholders viewed Opar's appointment as a crucial breakthrough, reflecting a growing demand for inclusive governance and equal participation in the region's development agenda. Her election underscores the increasing recognition of women's capabilities in leadership roles within West Nile.

Reflecting on her political journey, Opar, who has consistently overcome male competitors, dedicated her victory to women across West Nile. She highlighted her previous achievements, including becoming the first female LC III Chairperson of Thatha Division and the first female Mayor of Nebbi Municipality.
