NEMA evacuates 12 children, 10 infants, 159 others from Libya

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has facilitated the return of 181 Nigerian citizens from Tripoli, Libya, through the Assisted Voluntary Return programme. This initiative, a collaboration between the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Federal Government of Nigeria, aims to ensure the safe and dignified repatriation of Nigerians facing difficult circumstances abroad.

The National Emergency Management Agency, Lagos Operations Office, in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, has received 181 Nigerian returnees from Tripoli, Libya, under the ongoing Assisted Voluntary Return programme facilitated by the International Organisation for Migration in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The returnees, comprising 159 adults, 12 children, and 10 infants, arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on April 27, 2026. The breakdown indicates a significant number of women and children among the group, highlighting the diverse demographics affected by irregular migration. Officials from the Nigeria Immigration Service were present to conduct biometric registration and documentation, crucial steps for seamless reintegration into society.

The returnees arrived on April 27, 2026, at approximately 20:13 hours at the cargo terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, aboard an Air Buraq Airline flight with registration number 5A-BAB.

Upon arrival, NEMA, in coordination with other stakeholders, provided immediate humanitarian assistance. This included essential provisions like food and potable water, medical attention, and logistical support. Crucially, counseling services were also offered to help the returnees cope with their experiences and begin the process of rebuilding their lives. This reception exercise underscores the Nigerian government's commitment to its citizens abroad, even as it reflects the ongoing challenges of irregular migration and the need for safe, legal pathways.

In line with the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safe, dignified, and humane return of its citizens, the returnees were provided with immediate humanitarian assistance, including food and potable water; medical care; ambulance services; luggage handling; logistics support; as well as counselling and coordination services.
