Nepal army searches for over 100 trapped in hydropower plant tunnels after flash floods

Rescue teams from the Nepalese army are engaged in a critical search for over 100 individuals trapped inside the tunnels of a hydropower plant. The situation arose two days after devastating flash floods swept through the region, inundating the area and stranding workers.

We are focusing on search and rescue of people. Some are trapped in the tunnels of the Trishuli 3A hydropower plant.

Two army helicopters have been dispatched to the Trishuli 3A hydropower plant in the Rasuwa district. However, the challenging terrain and the difficulty in locating the tunnel entrances are hampering rescue efforts. The Nepalese army has reported rescuing 350 people from the affected area under extremely risky conditions, but the search for the remaining over 100 continues.

Two helicopters have been sent to the scene, but it is challenging because it is difficult to find the entrance to the tunnels.

India has offered assistance by sending a specialized rescue team, leveraging their extensive experience in complex tunnel rescue operations within the Himalayan mountain range. According to Indian government officials, a reconnaissance team will be dispatched first to assess the conditions and determine the necessary equipment. This offer comes after a successful Indian-led rescue of 41 workers trapped in tunnels in Uttarakhand in 2023.
