Nepal flood death toll rises to 579 as thousands remain missing

Nepal is grappling with a devastating flood crisis after a glacial outburst in the Himalayas unleashed torrents that overwhelmed the Bhotekoshi River. The latest figures indicate that the death toll has tragically climbed to 579, with the number of missing persons reaching a staggering 1,924.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported that rescue efforts are ongoing, with approximately 4,000 individuals saved from the affected areas. The scale of the disaster is immense, impacting thousands of lives and leaving many families searching for loved ones.

Among the missing are 517 foreign nationals, with significant numbers from India (183), the United States (62), Ukraine (33), and the United Kingdom (33). Additionally, 149 Nepali citizens are unaccounted for. The Nepalese police confirmed that individuals from 36 different countries are among those missing.

Over 15,000 security personnel have been deployed to aid in the search and rescue operations. The disaster highlights the vulnerability of communities in the Himalayan region to climate-related events and the challenges of managing such large-scale emergencies.
