Nepal flood survivors targeted by looters; 29 arrested

In the wake of severe flash floods that have devastated villages along the Nepal-Tibet border, a disturbing trend of looting has emerged in the affected areas. As rescue teams continue their search for the missing, criminals are reportedly exploiting the chaos, targeting both survivors and the deceased. These acts of opportunism have led to significant public outrage and prompted swift police action.

In one particularly brazen incident, a safe washed away by the floods was discovered along the Trishuli River. Despite the ongoing rescue efforts and the potential for rightful owners to reclaim their property, a group of locals reportedly broke into the safe and stole a large sum of cash. Police responded rapidly, arresting 29 suspects, primarily residents from the Mastar area of Ward 4 in Ghalchhi, with some individuals also coming from Chitwan and Parsa. Authorities managed to recover approximately 9.26 million Nepalese Rupees (about $70,000 USD) from the arrested individuals.

This is not the first instance of such criminal activity reported in the flood-affected regions. Earlier, a video circulated online showing two men stealing gold earrings from a deceased victim, sparking widespread anger across Nepal. The recurrence of these looting incidents has intensified concerns about the security situation in the disaster zones.

Official figures indicate the severity of the floods, with Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reporting 626 deaths and 2,426 missing persons. Chinese authorities have reported 7 deaths and 554 missing on the Tibetan side. The combination of natural disaster and criminal exploitation presents a dire challenge for the affected communities and rescue operations.
