Nepal floods: Malaysian foreign ministry awaiting official confirmation of citizen deaths

Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, known as Wisma Putra, has issued a statement clarifying its position on reports of Malaysian casualties in the recent floods that struck Nepal's Rasuwa District. As of the latest update, the ministry firmly states that it has not received any official confirmation regarding the deaths of any Malaysian citizens.

Wisma Putra acknowledged that unverified information and rumors have been circulating on social media platforms and through unofficial channels, suggesting potential fatalities among Malaysians caught in the disaster. In response, the ministry has activated its channels, including the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu, to urgently seek official confirmation from the Nepalese authorities.

The ministry is urging the public to refrain from speculating or sharing unverified information. It emphasized that such misinformation can cause unnecessary anxiety and distress to the families of those potentially affected. Malaysians are advised to await official statements and to respect the privacy of the victims and their families during this sensitive time.

In parallel efforts, the Malaysian High Commission in New Delhi and the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing have also been engaged to assist in this matter by liaising with relevant authorities in their respective host countries. The embassy in Kathmandu is maintaining close contact with Nepalese authorities, search and rescue teams, the Nepal Tourism Board, travel agencies, and major hospitals in Kathmandu to ascertain the safety and whereabouts of Malaysian nationals in the affected region.
