Nepal Journalist Slams Beijing Over 'Untimely' Flood Warnings After Deadly Tibet Disaster

A devastating flash flood in Tibet, near the Nepal border, has resulted in a climbing death toll and numerous missing persons, simultaneously igniting a dispute over cross-border early warning systems between China and Nepal. Parshuram Kaphle, a senior diplomatic correspondent from Nepal, publicly questioned whether China provided timely alerts to downstream communities.

Kaphle stated on social platform X that Nepal has consistently responded to its northern neighbor's "legitimate security concerns." However, he lamented that "our northern neighbor has severely harmed us." He directly attributed the "heavy human cost" to the "failure to provide prior warning for such a massive disaster."

He further criticized that Nepal "continuously faces crises originating from their territory" yet continues to meet Beijing's demands, whether necessary or not. Kaphle questioned why Nepal alone must bear the cost of such a "one-sided love."

Nepalese officials believe the disaster was caused by a glacial collapse in Tibet, which unleashed a massive flow of rocks, sediment, and water. This debris formed a landslide dam on the Lhende River, which eventually breached, unleashing the destructive flood. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) corroborated this, reporting on August 27 that the disaster was primarily triggered by glacial collapse and landslides, with catastrophic effects downstream.

Survivors have begun returning to their homes near the Nepal border, facing the grim reality of the disaster's aftermath. The controversy highlights the critical need for effective and timely disaster communication between nations, especially when upstream events can have devastating consequences downstream.
