Nepal Tragedy: Hundreds Missing After Glacier Collapse Triggers Floods

Rescue teams scrambled on the Nepal-Tibet border to find hundreds of people missing after sudden floods and landslides claimed at least 160 lives. The disaster has devastated entire villages, and authorities fear the death toll will rise significantly.

Many of the missing are foreign tourists, complicating identification and recovery efforts. Officials reported 403 people unaccounted for, including 341 foreigners. Notably, 133 Indian nationals were on a pilgrimage to the sacred Mount Kailash in Tibet when the catastrophe struck.

Surveillance footage from the Chinese side of the border captured a terrifying scene of mud and debris crashing into a multi-story building, engulfing it as people desperately fled. The surge also swept away buses and cars.

Chinese state media reported "numerous casualties" and a preliminary toll of three dead and 265 missing on their side. The U.S. government offered condolences and pledged $500,000 to aid rescue operations, according to the State Department. Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed no Mexican nationals were affected, advising citizens in Nepal to follow local authorities' guidance and contact the Mexican embassy in India if needed.
