The European Union is implementing a significant overhaul of vehicle safety standards with the General Safety Regulation 2 (GSR2), which mandates a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) for all new vehicles sold within the bloc starting July 7. This move, part of the EU's ambitious "Vision Zero" initiative aiming to eliminate road deaths by 2050, represents one of the strictest approaches to vehicle safety globally. While the goal of saving lives and preventing serious injuries—estimated at over 25,000 lives and 140,000 injuries by 2038—is commendable, the directive comes with a substantial financial burden for consumers. The cost of these mandated technologies is projected to add between €400 and €1,500 to the price of new cars, a figure that has already begun to impact models like the Dacia Sandero and Peugeot 208. This price increase, coupled with the upcoming Euro 7 emissions standards, could push the cost of new vehicles up by as much as €2,000 by 2026. The Croatian automotive market, like others in the EU, will feel this pinch, potentially making new car ownership less accessible for many. Unlike in the United States, where some of these technologies are still optional, the EU's mandatory approach underscores its commitment to road safety, even at the expense of affordability.
